Nehal Desai

Nehal Desai is the Founder and President of Building Innovations, Inc. He brings a breadth of construction, architecture, real estate, and project management experience to the company, and is responsible for all aspects of development, beginning with the customer’s concept through design development and culminating with early delivery of the project.

Nehal began his construction career as a Project Engineer in Chicago in 2000 and has held management and leadership positions at The Walsh Group. At Walsh, Nehal most recently served as Senior Project Manager and Leader of Chicago’s Center of Excellence in hospitality and office buildings.  Chicago’s Hotel Zachary in the lively Wrigleyville neighborhood, Canal Origins Boathouse in Bridgeport, and 318 N. Carpenter office building in the historic Fulton Market District, are amongst the most significant projects he led during his 20-year tenure at The Walsh Group.  John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County was Nehal’s first assignment as an employee at Walsh and it remains his favorite project to date.  Nehal is grateful to his mentors and has appreciated the opportunity to work for The Walsh Group.

As an Indian immigrant, Nehal utilized his early education, training, and family support to take the leap of faith and seize the American Dream right here in Chicago. He has firsthand seen how U.S. opportunity, freedom, and ingenuity can positively transform people’s lives and create honorable economic security.

Nehal has managed a progressively larger portfolio of residential and renovation projects since he incorporated Building Innovations, Inc. He is passionate about his customers and takes pride in bringing his clients’ ideas to fruition and delivering successful projects ahead of schedule.  His mantra to success is simple: Plan the work and work the plan, measure improvement, and make it a habit to get better at all the times, be passionate, be curious, appreciate the opportunity, and help others as much as you can.  As a Chicago resident for over 24 years, Nehal admires Daniel Burnham’s early urban planning work, and his personal mission statement aligns with the famous architect’s quote “Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men’s blood.”

Passionate about sustainability, Nehal is a LEED Accredited Professional and implements green building practices to ensure integration of environmentally friendly design and construction methods.  He believes preserving the environment is part of community stewardship and the only option to ultimately promote health, wellness, and work life harmony. He deliberately emphasizes to REDUCE consumption, REUSE when you can, and RECYCLE to help eliminate waste.

Nehal holds a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Gujarat University in India and a master’s degree in Project Management from Northwestern University’s McCormick School of Engineering.  Nehal resides on the North side of Chicago with his wife and two children.  His wife is a tenured teacher with the Chicago Public Schools where she has dedicated more than 24 years in public service career.
